Visit with Tom and Dorothy in Shelby, NC

08/24/2019 - Just a short drive today to visit with Tom and Dorothy Young in Shelby, North Carolina (135 miles).  We met them in 2017 on our caravan tour through the Canadian Yukon and Alaska.  Tom said that if we were ever in N.C., we should look them up, so we did.  I actually contacted him before we ever left home in June, and he was very welcoming, asking us to come and visit with them at their home.

We left Misty Mountain campground around 10:00 am and drove to Shelby N.C.  The weather had turned much cooler, and we were very happy about that.  When we got to their home, they greeted us with open arms.  We sat outside and talked for an hour or so.  Tom got on the phone and got an appointment with a Newmar dealer in Marion, NC (on our route to Asheville,) to help us with the dash A/C on our motorhome.  Dorothy invited all 5 of us (Trish, Bev, and Susan too) to appetizers and drinks at 5:00 p.m.

Their home sets on a large piece of land, with a large barn (which houses their motorhome), and other out buildings.  It is really beautiful here.

Trish, Bev, and Susan joined us around 4:00 pm. and we had a quick 'catch up' visit (they are camping in a campground about 16 miles away).  Trish and Susan made plans to go outlet shopping tomorrow (Sunday), but I declined, as I just cannot walk that far.

08/25/2019 -  It is Sunday, and Tom and Dorothy invited us to join them for church at 9:30.  We accepted, and met Dorothy at 9:00 to drive to their church, First Baptist of Shelby.  We were introduced to many of their friends - they were all so cordial and welcomed us.  The service was about and hour or so, with lots of music.  I really enjoyed it.  Then we had coffee and cake in the next room.   Before we left, Tom asked what we would like to do.  We told him that we would like to take them out to dinner.  He said to meet up at the house at 5:00 for cocktails, and we will talk about what to do for dinner.   Both Tom and Dorothy had business meetings and chores to do at the church, so Tom and I left and drove back to our RV, parked in their driveway.

At 5:00 we joined them Tom and Dorothy in their home for cocktails, then left for a local Italian restaurant called Veronna's.  The dinner was great.  We went back to the house for coffee and visited  a little more.  Then we called it a night and headed back to the RV.

08/26/2019 - We packed up early, met Tom  Y. in the garden (he was picking okra from his vegetable garden for Susan).  We said our 'good byes" again, and headed out for Tom Johnson RV in Marion, NC.  We had a 9:30 appointment to look at the dash A/C and two small items (at least we thought they would be small).

We arrived at Tom Johnson RV, now Tom Johnson Camping Center (Camping World bought the business from Tom Johnson about 4 years ago).  The property covered about 60 acres.  They had a Camping World store up front, a Sales Office, a Campground, Rally Grounds, and a Café and lounge for the customers to sit and wait for their RV to be worked on.  I was truly impressed at how everything was so clean and efficient.  We were greeted by Melissa Wilson, our Service Advisor.  She had made the appointment for us and followed through the entire job.  They took the coach into the service bay (they have 32 service bays) and we went back to the lounge, had coffee and breakfast, and waited to find the results.  By the way, we had three dogs with us, our two and Molly who belongs to Trish, who was driving to Red Bay, Alabama to get her coach worked on.

We reported that the dash A/C did not work, the rear tail lights did not work, and the back up camera only (all other cameras were fine) was frozen.  After several hours of diagnostics, we were told that they had never seen a camera problem where only one camera malfunctioned - for that they needed to order a part from Newmar to fix it.  The dash A/C and the tail light problem was likely a computer module and they needed to order that part from Freightliner, who built the chassis.  Both parts were ordered 'overnight'.  Meanwhile, they set us up in their campground at no cost to us for the night.

The campground was lovely - full hookups and very clean.  Cement, level pads and daily pickups of trash.  What else could we need!  Tomorrow we will take the Jeep and make our tour at The Biltmore.
