The Beginning of our trip

6/9/2019 - Supposed to leave this morning after a one week delay, but last night we could not get the refrigerator to turn on.  Tom tried everything, but to no avail.  Without a refrigerator we are going nowhere.  One more day delay!  Also, we have an error message on our generator that we do not understand.  Since today is a Sunday, nobody is open or will talk to us, so we have to wait until tomorrow.

6/10/2019 - Got the refrigerator on (we just didn't know how to operate the fancy command station in the coach).  Also, the generator error message was for another model of our coach, not for ours, so Newmar told us to disregard it.  So.......We are off on a "Commando Run" (driving without much touring) from Palm Desert to Indiana.  We have 7 days to get to Elkhart, Indiana for a service appointment on our RV.  After Indiana, we will be back on our original schedule, which is a MUCH easier drive, with lots more touring.  We are heading ultimately to Bar Harbor, Maine (after spending some time in Canada), to join a caravan of about 25 rigs touring through the North Atlantic Provinces, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, and Prince Edward Island (P.E.I.).  Here is a map of our caravan tour:

It will last 32 days, and end in Cavendish, PEI.  I am expecting some FABULOUS LOBSTER (also pronounced "Lobstah" in the Northeast.  After the tour, we will be taking our time to tour through the middle of the country on our way home.  At least, that is the big picture.

6/10/2019 - For now, we are off from Palm Desert at 8:45 a.m. and headed to Flagstaff, AZ. According to Google, it is 373 miles  - - many more miles than we are used to drive.  In fact, up until now, we have tried never to drive more than 300 miles a day, as it is just too tiring (and a little boring since we don't stop to see any sights).  Our normal drive is about 200-240 miles.  Our stop here is just for rest and a good night's sleep, then off to the next long drive.

We arrived in Flagstaff at 5:30 p.m. (stopping for fuel and lunch).  The campground was nice - they had a Steak House on the premises.  Two buses full of people pulled in while we were there.  Their food must be good, but we are too tired even to eat.  We went to bed early.  Nothing we can do late tonight.

6/11/2019 - Up early and out at 7:45 a.m.  Only one stop for fuel and lunch and on to Tijeras N.M, a out 20 miles beyond Albuquerque.  Very nice people there, but the campgound was very hilly and we had to unhook the car in order to make the climb up a gravel road to the campground.  We arrived around 5 pm. and found that a rock had hit our windshield in front of the driver side, and a crack had grown up and to the left for about half the windshield.  Nothing we could do that late, so we packed it in for the night  I don't think Tom slept very well.

6/12/2019 - Up early again at 7:30 a.m.  I called and found a windshield repairman, Tom @ The Pit Stop, who drove out to our campsite from Albuquerque and repaired the windshield good enough to get us to Indiana.  He was a character, retired and full of stories of his dad (who died at 98).  We enjoyed talking to him.  While he was working on the windshield, I had time to turn in the claim to our insurance.  When he left, we packed up and left the campground around 10:30 a.m.  Another day of 360 miles to Liberal, Kansas.  I called ahead to let the desk that we were going to come in late due to a road hazard.  She told me that she would wait up for us.  When we pulled in at 6:30 p.m., she was waiting outside for us.  She loved our coach and wanted to see inside, so I showed her through.  For us, it was dinner and to bed early.

6/13/2019 -  Onward.....to Paxico, Kansas, near the Wizard of Oz Museum.  I really wanted to stop and see it, but we just didn't have enough time this trip.  It will have to wait until the next trip.  We followed the GPS, and got sent through a bunch of farms. Many of the roads were just dirt, so we drove out of our way to get on paved roads and back to the highway---another delay of about 1 hour.  Finally, we arrived in Paxico, Kansas to a lovely campground with lots of grass and trees and a great deal of open spaces.  We even had a very busy set of train tracks right outside our coach.  At least, they only blew their horns about 1/4 mile down the tracks.  We noticed that there was so much to see in this part of Kansas.  Not only the Wizard of Oz Museum, but also the boyhood home of Eisenhower and the Presidential Library in Abilene, Kansas.  Also Fort Riley, the Kansas Racing Car Museum,  Junction City (which looked very interesting), and the town of Paxico, an old western town with a shootout every noon. We MUST come back here!

Sorry that there are no pictures here.  Until we can stop driving and start touring, I won't have any pictures to share.  That should be around Indianapolis, Indiana where we plan on visiting the famous speedway.  Stay tuned!
